In the summer of 1928, the body was discovered at Beaumont Hamel. The grave of the Unknown British Soldier was not marked with a wooden cross. The body was exhumed and identified by a General Service Army Uniform, Boots and Cap Badge. The Cap Badge and a piece of waterproof were forwarded to Base. The body, now identified, was reburied at Serre Road Cemetery No. 2.

Frederick’s brother, George Albert Mayhew, died on the 15th April 1901, Ipswich and was buried in Section H, Ipswich Old Cemetery.

Frederick is also remembered on the war memorial at St. John the Baptist church, Ipswich.
