Baptised on the 29^th September 1895, at St. Matthew’s Church, Ipswich – family home at 17, Burlington Road, Ipswich.

Died: 19th July 1917; age 22; KiA – shell.

E.A.D.T. – Wednesday, 25^th July 1917 – 2^nd LIEUTENANT G. E. SANDERS – A letter received by Mr. and Mrs. Tom Sanders, of Russell Road, Ipswich, from Lieutenant Colonel Ellis de Vesian, of the London Regiment, notifies the death of their only son, 2^nd Lieutenant George Edward Sanders, who was killed by a shell on the 19^th July. The Colonel adds: “Your son had been my intelligence officer while in the line, and had done exceedingly well as such. He was a most zealous and reliable officer, and his loss is a great one for all of us; his pluck, ability, and cheeriness endeared him to all. His grave is in a little cemetery on the south side of the Ypres-Comines Canal.

2^nd Lieutenant George Sanders, who was educated at Ipswich Grammar School, a few weeks after the war broke out, joined the Suffolk Cyclists and got his commission in October 1915, in the Northern Cyclists. He went to the Front in October 1916 and was attached to the London Regiment. He was 22 years of age.
