Born: 1894, Ipswich.

Baptised: 2^nd September 1894, at St. Peter’s Church, Ipswich – family home at Cliff Cottage, St. Clement’s, Ipswich.

Died: 28th November 1916; age 22; KiA – by a shell.

Evening Star – Wednesday, 20^th December 1916 – IPSWICH MAN KILLED IN ACTION – Mr. and Mrs. Howard, of 22, Chalon Street, Ipswich, have received the following letter from Chaplain P. C. Danvers relative to the death of their son, Private Samuel J. Howard, of the Suffolk Regiment, who was killed in action on the 28^th November: –

“It is with the deepest sympathy that I write to inform you that your son, Private S. Howard, lost his life on the 28^th November, while on duty. He was one of a working party, and, with two others, was killed by a shell. I am writing instead of his Company Commander, who has returned to the trenches. He asked me to tell you how much your son’s bravery had been appreciated by his late Company Commander.

“I refer to the attack of the 13^th, in which the Suffolks took part. Your son was a company orderly. His commander, who valued him highly, was taken prisoner, and your son escaped unhurt after acquitting himself splendidly throughout the whole time. His death is a great loss to his company and battalion. His body was brought back by his comrades and was laid to rest in a military cemetery.”

Soldiers’ Effects to Gertrude May Hunting – fiancée.

Samuel was the dearly beloved fiancé of Gertrude May Hunting, of The Belvedere, 26, Cox Lane, Ipswich.

Gertrude’s brother, EDWIN JAMES HUNTING, died from wounds received in action on the 22nd March 1918, France. He was ranked a Private for the Suffolk Regiment, 7th Battalion.

Samuel is also remembered on the war memorial at St. Peter’s Church, Ipswich.
