Evening Star – Tuesday, 21st August 1917 – Mrs. Ellen Robinson, of Cook’s Court, Cox Lane, Ipswich, has received, in reply to inquiries made about her son, Private Thomas Samuel Robinson, of the Suffolk Regiment, a letter from Captain C. B. Nichols, in which the officer states: “All the news he can find is that he was wounded on the way to the trenches, and went down to the dressing-station. Since then, we have heard nothing further, but I am very much afraid that the dressing-station in question was blown up by a German shell, which hit one of our dressing-stations that day, and I think it must have been the one, as we have no further news of other casualties that went there. We miss your son very much.” Adds the officer: “I knew him well, and you will see that he was a valued member of the Company and of my platoon when I tell you that I had him as my platoon observer, which is a very responsible position, and for which we always take a good man.”

Thomas’s father was Thomas Barten Robinson, born in 1865 in Brighton, East Sussex.
